What Brought Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein to Polo Bar?

The new Netflix series The Politician—the first for the service from producer Ryan Murphy—won't premiere until September 27, but on July 16 a New York City audience got a special sneak preview. The series is a dark comedy about a high-stakes campaign for student council in an affluent California enclave, but the evening in New York was decidedly relaxed. Guests including Grace Gummer, Beanie Feldstein, Tina Brown, Gayle King, Bee Carrozzini, and Sandra Bernhard joined series stars Ben Platt (he's also a producer), Lucy Boynton, and Julia Schlaepfer for cocktails and an intimate screening at the Whitby Hotel followed by dinner at Polo Bar. Lest anyone think the drama would only be on-screen, however, campaign buttons for the rival characters were distributed throughout the evening. No matter how things turn out in the series, even this early in the race The Politician has our vote.
