A 13-year-old Dallas Independent School District student has died after he was found facedown at the bottom of a hotel swimming pool during a school trip, his family confirms.

According to WOAI, Hoang Minh Phan was on a school trip in San Antonio where he visited the hotel's pool with two other students and a sponsor on Friday. The sponsor had pulled him out of the pool.

Following the incident, the young student was placed on life support. “He was [brain] dead when they pulled him out of the water,” Hoang’s brother, Hien Phan, told WOAI. “We had him on life support trying to find any kind of miracle. That’s what broke my heart.”

Hoang's brother wrote on Twitter that he was on a trip with his school, Dallas Environmental Science Academy, when he "died under their supervision."

The family had ultimately chosen to remove Hoang from life support following the incident.

“He loved everybody with an open heart,” Hien told WOAI. “He always smiled. He always made sure that you were happy.”

Dallas Independent School District provided the following statement: "We are saddened to learn about an incident involving a student from Dallas Environmental Science Academy, during an out-of-town math and science competition. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and school community. We want to assure families that student safety is always a top priority.

"Dallas ISD is committed to providing support to students and staff. A counseling team has been made available and will continue to serve as needed. Once again, our thoughts and prayers are with the family."

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family in order to honor the 13-year-old, as well as to seek any answers regarding the incident at the pool.
