Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been snapped up by NBC, 24 hours after the show was axed by Fox.

News broke on Thursday that Fox would not be renewing the police sitcom, which stars Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher and Joe Lo Truglio.

Cast members of Brooklyn Nine-Nine had expressed their thanks to fans after an outpouring of support on social media following the show's cancellation after five seasons.

A day later, they were thanking them again - this time for ensuring the show's survival.

Dan Goor, the show's co-creator, tweeted on Friday night that season 6 would go ahead after all.

"Hey everyone, just wanted to say no big deal but.... NBC JUST PICKED #BROOKLYN99 UP FOR SEASON 6!!! Thanks in no small part to you, the best fans in the history of the world!"

Lo Truglio also thanked the show's fans who "made this happen".

Melissa Fumero, who plays Amy Santiago, said the fans "got loud and you were heard".

Stephanie Beatriz, who plays Rosa Diaz on the show, said "you did it".

Within hours of the show's cancellation on Thursday, fans had started asking streaming services such as Netflix to take it over.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of hit musical Hamilton, was among those who had called for Brooklyn Nine-Nine to be renewed.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine debuted in 2013 and although it has attracted a loyal fanbase, it failed to achieve stellar ratings.

The final episode of Season 5 will feature the wedding of Jake, played by Samberg, and Amy, played by Fumero.

It will air on May 20.
