Brooke Shields is on the mend after a nasty femur fracture.

The Suddenly Susan star recently rocked heels for the first time at an event in late October, months after breaking a bone in her thigh in January.

"This is the first time I'm really in heels and walking any length of time," she recently told Page Six at the American Ballet Theatre's Fall Gala. "I'm definitely still in rehab. Every time I think I'm strong enough, I realize I have to go back to [physical therapy]."

Shields, 56, broke her femur during a workout at a New York City gym when she fell off of a balancing board. "It felt like it was all in slow motion. And then I just started screaming," she told People in March. "Sounds came out that I've never heard before. The pain was so excruciating." Shields initially feared she was paralyzed until she realized she could feel her toes. The supermodel underwent a series of surgeries to insert metal rods and plates to help her bone heal. When she finally left the hospital after more than two weeks, Shields developed a staph infection and was hospitalized once more for emergency blood transfusions and antibiotics. Upon leaving the hospital a second time, she initially resisted physical therapy and opted for workouts instead, but realized the fracture was too hard to overcome without help.

"For the first time in my entire life, I thought, 'I can't power through this,'" she continued to People. "I can't even stand on my leg or go up a step. I need to relearn how to even walk. The feeling of helplessness is shocking."

Back in February, Shields posted an Instagram video of herself using crutches at the hospital. "Broke my femur. Beginning to mend. No matter what your challenge is, make a positive choice, for yourself, to move forward. #BeginningisNow." A month later, she shared another clip of herself starting to walk-in physical therapy.

Finally, this month, Shields was back at the gym, posting an Instagram video of her leg workouts.

Though she is thrilled to be back on her fitness grind, Shields knows she isn't totally out of the woods yet—but she's keeping a positive attitude. "I don't like something getting the better of me," she told Page Six. "Especially not a silly, dumb accident!"
