Brock Osweiler still terrible, Eagles drub Broncos

After watching Trevor Siemian’s one-touchdown, three-interception outing against NFC West rival Kansas City last week, the Denver Broncos benched Siemian and went with Brock Osweiler as their starting quarterback.

Osweiler was awful on Sunday as Denver traveled east to play the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Broncos lost for the fourth straight time, 51-23.

The score looks a lot closer than the game was, in part because the Eagles sat Carson Wentz with over nine minutes left in the game, giving Nick Foles the reins of the offense. Foles was quickly strip-sacked by Von Miller – who hadn’t gotten to Wentz – and teammate Brandon Marshall scooped up the loose ball and ran it back 19 yards for the score.

But when it mattered, Osweiler was terrible.

He was 8-for-18 passing with an interception at halftime, and late in the third quarter, he dropped to 8-for-21 after his second interception of the game. That second pick led to another Eagles touchdown, putting them up 44-9 with three minutes left in the third.

After that point, however, when the game was out of control for Denver, Osweiler completed 11 of 17 attempts.

The Broncos were already down 10-3 in the first when Osweiler threw his first interception, on a mid-range pass over the middle intended for Demaryius Thomas. Veteran defensive back Patrick Robinson jumped the route and made the play.

On the second interception, Osweiler heaved the ball up for Thomas on a deep pass. While Thomas was hugging the sideline, the ball was several yards inside of him, and an easy interception for safety Rodney McLeod.

Philadelphia turned both turnovers into touchdowns.

While Denver now has to go back to the drawing board when it comes to quarterback, the Eagles and their young star quarterback, Wentz, are now 8-1. The first 35 teams to start the season 8-1 all made it to the playoffs, so chances are excellent Philadelphia will be part of the postseason.

It was the first time since 2013, against the Bears, that the Eagles scored 50 or more points; it was the first time since 2010, against Oakland, that the Broncos have allowed 50 or more points.
