One of the most anticipated Broadway productions of spring 2022 is the limited engagement revival of William Shakespeare's Macbeth. Starring Daniel Craig as Macbeth and Ruth Negga making her Broadway debut as Lady Macbeth, the production begins performances on March 29 and opens officially April 28. The show will run for 15 weeks at the Longacre Theatre.

Macbeth will be directed by Tony Award winner Sam Gold, who last directed a gender-blind Broadway revival of Shakespeare's King Lear starring Glenda Jackson. Gold previously shared that his eventual plan is to take on all of Shakespeare's tragedies.

"I think that right now, as we come out of the extreme darkness of the last couple of years, there's an instinct as you make it through the day to pretend life's normal and just go about your lives in the face of something so enormous that we've all shared," Gold told Entertainment Weekly of his decision to stage Macbeth in 2022.

"I want to take some time to help people sit in the darkness and have a cathartic experience with it, be able to process it, be able to not bury it somewhere and not deal with it. It's one of the darkest plays ever written, but I think that theater gives us the opportunity to have actors go through that darkness so that you don't have to," he added.

The Macbeth cast is shaping up to be a star-studded group. Craig, well known for his portrayal of James Bond in five Bond films, will play Macbeth. He and Gold are already well acquainted; they worked together in a 2016 off-Broadway production of Othello. Negga, who will make her Broadway debut as Lady Macbeth, most recently starred in Rebecca Hall's Passing, a film based on an adaptation of Nella Larsen’s novel of the same name. Gold wanted to work with Negga after seeing her play Hamlet in a St. Ann's Warehouse production of Hamlet in early 2020.

Joining Craig and Negga will be Hadestown's Amber Gray as Banquo, Billions' Asia Kate Dillon as Malcom, Paul Lazar as Duncan, and Grantham Coleman as Macduff. The cast also includes Phillip James Brannon as Ross, Maria Dizzia as Lady Macduff, Emeka Guindo as Fleance, Bobbi MacKenzie as Macduff's child, Michael Patrick Thornton as Lennox, and Danny Wolohan as Seyton.

The ensemble will be completed by Che Ayende, Eboni Flowers, and Peter Smith, and Stevie Ray Dallimore will be the standby for Daniel Craig.

Macbeth begins performances at Broadway’s Longacre Theatre on Tuesday, March 29, with an official opening on Thursday, April 28.
