Are Britney Spears’ “Everytime” Lyrics About Her Baby With Justin Timberlake?

After the shocking revelations released in her memoir The Woman in Me, everyone is wondering if Britney Spears’ “Everytime” lyrics reference Justin Timberlake and her abortion.

Justin and Britney were together from 1998 to 2002 when they both were rising to fame and together became one of the biggest couples in show business. As revealed in the 2022 documentary Framing Britney Spears, Justin leaked that “Britney wasn’t a virgin” following their split, leading to hurtful headlines and reports about the “Gimme More” singer. It took nearly 20 years after their split—and the demands of fans around the world—for Justin to issue a considerable apology to the star.

By far the biggest surprise in The Woman in Me, Britney revealed that she was pregnant with his baby during the relationship, but they decided to get an abortion. “I loved Justin so much. I always expected us to have a family together one day. This would just be much earlier than I’d anticipated,” she wrote. “But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.”

The pop icon admitted that she “agreed not to have the baby” but seemed to have some regrets about the decision they made more than 20 years ago. “I don’t know if that was the right decision. If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it,” she revealed. “And yet Justin was so sure that he didn’t want to be a father.”

“Everytime” was released in 2003 as part of Britney’s fourth studio album, In the Zone; released a year after Britney and Justin broke up. It was also her first meaningful songwriting credit. So what clues are there that Britney Spears’ “Everytime” lyrics are about her abortion? With words like, “My weakness caused you pain / And this song’s my sorry”, we can’t help but think fans are onto something. Here’s what we found.

Notice me
Take my hand
Why are we
Strangers when
Our love is strong?
Why carry on without me?

Every time I try to fly, I fall
Without my wings, I feel so small
I guess I need you, baby
And every time I see you in my dreams
I see your face, it’s haunting me
I guess I need you, baby

I make believe
That you are here
It’s the only way
I see clear
What have I done?
You seem to move uneasy

And every time I try to fly, I fall
Without my wings, I feel so small
I guess I need you, baby
And every time I see you in my dreams
I see your face, you’re haunting me
I guess I need you, baby

I may have made it rain
Please, forgive me
My weakness caused you pain
And this song’s my sorry
At night, I pray
That soon your face will fade away

And every time I try to fly, I fall
Without my wings, I feel so small
I guess I need you, baby
And every time I see you in my dreams
I see your face, you’re haunting me
I guess I need you, baby

“Everytime” music video

Directed by acclaimed photographer and music video director David LaChapelle, the accompanying music video for “Everytime” is a dark and introspective visual story that reflects themes of love, regret, and loss. It features a storyline where Britney is shown as a successful singer but faces personal struggles. The video opens with her in a limo obviously mid-fight with her boyfriend in the video, played by actor Stephen Dorff.

They arrive at a lavish hotel, hounded by photographers and fans, only to fight more when they get upstairs. There’s a lot of smashing of glass. Britney runs a bath when she notices her scalp is bleeding, then submerges herself under the water only to seemingly drown. Later, her boyfriend discovers her blued body in the bathtub.

The video continues with scenes depicting her being loaded into an ambulance, arriving in a hospital and ultimately passing away, represented by Britney running through a hospital corridor into the light. What fans are talking about most is the inclusion of a woman saying hello to her baby for the first time as Britney watches on. “There were rumors years ago that Everytime is about that baby, which is also why there’s a baby in the video portraying ‘rebirth’,” a fan speculated on X.

Britney’s cowriter and former friend Annet Artani told Insider in 2021 about the songwriting process with Britney. “We cried through the whole process,” she said. It was cathartic and a bonding experience.”

During an appearance on Good Morning Britain in 2019, per Metro.uk, Dorff said described making the music video. “Yeah I was [in it], I saved her in that bathtub. And I break everything,” he said. “David LaChapelle, the director, was like, ‘Just break everything’… I said, ‘okay!’ I was only there for a few hours but we did a lot of breaking.” He continued: “[Britney] was really nice, too. She wrote that song, so I thought it was cool.” Very eloquent.

In a 2020 interview with The Independent, LaChapelle reflected on the pop culture icons of the late 90s, early 2000s. “Britney and Paris [Hilton] were trailblazers – we don’t have people like that in the zeitgeist anymore. There was nobody like those women. There wasn’t a Lil’ Kim before Lil’ Kim. There wasn’t a Paris Hilton before Paris Hilton. There weren’t people in the world in such a way before.”
