The first two episodes of Bridgerton season two carry a special significance for the Netflix hit's cast and crew. These episodes are both dedicated to Marc Pilcher, a celebrated hair and makeup artist who worked on season one of the show. Pilcher passed away in October of 2021, from COVID-19 complications.

Pilcher, a UK-based hair and makeup artist who'd previously worked on shows including Downton Abbey, won a Creative Arts Emmy in 2021 for his work on the first season of Bridgerton. "This was just the most exciting project for me to work on, to create for all of our beautiful cast," he said as he accepted the award. "I just want to say thank you. Thank you."

Less than a month later, Pilcher's representatives confirmed that he had died. "It is with the deepest of hearts we confirm that Marc Elliot Pilcher, Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award winning hair and makeup designer/stylist, passed away after a battle with COVID-19 on Sunday 3rd October 2021,” they said, per Deadline. “He was 53, double vaccinated with no underlying health condition.”

Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington, wrote a tribute to her late colleague on Instagram. "So heartbroken by the loss of Marc Pilcher, the brilliant and visionary Hair and Makeup designer for ‘Bridgerton’ Season One," she wrote. "Marc was so passionate about his work and so tremendously talented. Not even a month ago he won his first Emmy award. It’s a tragedy that he’s been taken so young when he had so much yet to do. Please also use this as a reminder that Covid is still a very real and present danger, please get vaccinated and mask up to protect yourself and others. My heart goes out to his friends and family, especially to his wonderful team Lynda, Lou, Adam, Hollie, Tanya and Claire. He loved and cared for you all so much and my heart goes out to you all. Rest in Peace Marc.”

"The passing of Marc Pilcher is beyond words," Bridgerton executive producer Shonda Rhimes wrote on Twitter at the time. "I will forever be in awe of the incredible hairstyling and makeup work that he brought to Bridgerton. My heart goes out to his loved ones as we lost him way too soon."

Pilcher isn't the only late member of the Bridgerton crew to get a dedication in the new season. The season two finale is dedicated to COVID coordinator Carole Prentice, who died unexpectedly in January after complications from surgery. Her son, Sebastian Prentice, told Metro how much she'd enjoyed working on the show's second season. "It was really amazing to see how much of a closely-knit friendship group she had established in such a short time there," he said.
