Bride-to-be wants people to steal her zero-waste ‘save the date’ idea, and TikTok is loving it

Everyone knows that planning a wedding can be costly and stressful, but as one bride-to-be recently pointed out on TikTok, they can also be hard on the environment.

That’s why Natalia (@quadzillas) — aka “Natalia the Buff Engineer” — is trying to be as eco-conscious as possible as she plans her upcoming nuptials. And she’s starting with her save-the-dates.

“OK, I want people to steal this idea. This is why I’m telling you about it,” she said.

“You know, like, if you do save the dates that are magnets, basically like 200 magnets with you and your fiancé’s face end up like sitting in a landfill somewhere until the end of time?” Natalia asked in her now-viral TikTok.

“Well, I was trying to avoid all that, so I actually found this woman on Etsy who works with a deaf woman who prints out plantable save-the-dates.”

In the clip, Natalia holds up one of her postcard-sized save-the-dates and says that she “loves” how they turned out. Not only do the cards feature a cute, beach-themed image on the front and a sweet drawing of the couple on the back — but all the wedding details are written in biodegradable ink and glitter.

Finally, a little message at the bottom of the postcard tells guests that if they plant the paper in some soil, it will eventually bloom into yellow marigolds.

Traditional wedding invitations tend to include a lot of extra inserts, from the actual invite to the RSVP card and hotel accommodations. Sometimes, they’re even made from acrylic instead of paper, which isn’t always recyclable.

And while magnets have become an increasingly popular way to remind guests about an important date, they eventually get tossed in the garbage and forgotten about. That doesn’t mean they’re suddenly gone from the earth, though.

According to Conserve Energy Future, magnets cannot be broken down into microorganisms and actually take “about 100 years” to break down into smaller pieces. And so, just like Natalia says in the video, if you send one (or 200) of them off to a landfill, it’s only going to sit there for years on end.

Instead, zero-waste save-the-dates like these can be an earth-friendly alternative for anyone planning a sustainable wedding.

Judging by the comments people left on the video, a lot of TikTokers are loving the idea (even if Natalia says her own mother “hates” them).

“THESE ARE PERFECTION,” wrote TikToker HokasMommy (@lesasass).

“I love them and I love you for doing this!” added Grinning Bobcat (@notth3dr0idy0ur3l00king4).

Several people said they either did this with their own save-the-dates or wedding favors, while some have received them for other sweet reasons.

“Such a good idea!” wrote @laurenelizabeth2388. “My vet did that when they sent me a card after my dogs passing. You think of your dog when they bloom every year.”

Meanwhile, at least one person admitted that they’d never even thought about this before.

“Wait the thought of save the dates rotting in landfills never crossed my mind till now,” commented Bri (@shotsofbuco).
