Breckenridge To Auction Historic Chairs For Charity

This past summer, several ski resorts have offered chairlift auctions for decommissioned lifts.

Yesterday, September 12th, Breckenridge Ski Resort, Colorado, announced they were joining the crowd, offering decommissioned chairs from the to-be-upgraded 5-Chair via an online auction.

The 5-Chair auction will be held virtually starting Thursday, September 21st at 12 PM MST. The auction closes on Friday, September 22nd at 12 PM. One hundred fourteen chairs are up for grabs.

As the 5-Chair was initially installed in 1970, Breckenridge reports that the auction is "your chance to own an original piece of Breckenridge Ski Resort history." Can't argue with that.

Proceeds from the auction will be split between two charitable causes: the Sol Center and the EpicPromise Employee Foundation.

The Sol Center is a project led by the Family & Intercultural Resource Center (FIRC) dedicated to constructing a building that will serve as headquarters for the FIRC and Building Hope, alongside housing a thrift store and a community food market.

The FIRC and Building Hope focus on empowering people in Summit County, Colorado, "through education and support to help them manage the challenges of housing, parenting, mental health & healthcare so our community can thrive."

The EpicPromise Employee Foundation provides Vail Resorts employees with hardship and educational grants.

The 5-Chair's replacement -- slated for opening next winter -- is the new Five SuperChair, a high-speed quad.

"With this lift upgrade, all four chairlifts that service Peak 8 will now be high-speed to assist with improved flow and circulation out of the heart of the resort, providing faster and easier access to the resort's Five Peaks," stated a Breckenridge press release detailing the new chair.
