Breaking news from Portugal.

Eleven-time world champ Kelly Slater has withdrawn from the MEO Rip Curl Pro at Supertubos due to ongoing issues from his recent hip surgery.

The WSL granted Slater a season wildcard last October and announced the withdrawal on social media last night.

The contest is the third stop on this year's Championship Tour. It follows Slater's losses at the Lexus Pipe Pro and the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach, where he was defeated in both by world number seven, Aussie Ethan Ewing.

Opening the clip, a commentator says:

"Hi everyone, we have some breaking news for you guys.

"Kelly Slater has unfortunately withdrawn from the MEO Rip Curl Pro due to his ongoing hip issues. Kelly's going to go through a series of new tests, MRIs, and medical tests. So he's not attending the event."

Local surfer Matias Canhoto, who hails from Peniche and recently won the Rip Curl grom search, has been selected to take the GOAT's place.

The commentator continued:

"A lot of people here in Portugal will compare him to a young Gabriel Medina and saw some clips of him, really great surfer, and super talent. So he's going to replace Kelly in that very heat three in the opening round."

Slater shared the WSL's story and wrote:

"Still dealing with hip recovery and still in pain with basic mobility.

"Thanks for the messages from the Portuguese fans and apologies I won't be seeing you in Supertubos.

"Hoping to feel better for Bells (the first event I surfed as a full-time tour surfer in 1992). Fingers crossed @wsl scores some good waves in Portugal and good luck to everyone."

Heal up, Kelly.
