  • Brandi Carlile appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to pay tribute to singer-songwriter John Prine, who died on April 7 at age 73 from complications related to COVID-19.

  • The two artists knew each other well and collaborated on John's 2018 album, The Tree of Forgiveness.

  • Brandi honored John with a performance of "Hello in There," a beloved song from his 1971 debut album.

Brandi Carlile stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to pay her respects to her friend and collaborator John Prine with a moving performance from her house in Maple Valley, Washington.

“There's so many amazing and powerful messages that John Prine has left the world, and for the people who weren’t familiar with his music, they’re about to get a whole lot of truth dropped on them, which I am really happy about, at least,” she said in the taped home appearance on Wednesday night.

Brandi chose to play one of John's most beloved songs, "Hello in There," which she said has special meaning amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“I think that this is a song that John would like me to sing, because this song refers to the people that we’re all staying home to protect,” Brandi said. "It reminds us that old people aren't expendable, that they made us who were are and they've given us every single thing that we have. Even though John never got to get old, and we all would've liked for him to…at the age of 24, when he wrote this song, he understood this."

Brandi and John have performed together multiple times in recent years. She played on his final album, The Tree of Forgiveness, for which he earned critical acclaim and several Grammy nominations. In 2018, Brandi and country rocker Sturgill Simpson teamed up with John for a special Late Show performance to promote the album.

Brandi also honored John on social media this week by sharing an emotional acoustic version of his song "Summer's End."

"Can’t sleep. Praying with this old guitar," she captioned the video on her Instagram. "I’m gonna miss singin’ this one with you John so tonight I’ll sing it to you. I know you didn’t make it home in the way we all wanted but you made it home. Put in a good word for us."

"All my love to Fiona ❤️ xoyoursingingpartner," she added, referring to John's wife, Fiona Whelan Prine.
