Brandeis coach Brian Meehan fired after multiple discrimination, racism complaints

Brandeis basketball coach Brian Meehan was fired on Thursday after a series of complaints against him alleged “preferential and discriminatory treatment, unprofessional behavior and racially biased treatment.”
Brandeis — a Division III school just outside of Boston — made the announcement in a statement on Thursday, which said the complaints began last year, prompting an investigation and unspecified disciplinary action.
His firing is a result of a new complaint that surfaced this week, the report said.
“Earlier this week, a new complaint was brought against the coach, and he was placed on immediate administrative leave,” Brandeis University president Ron Leibowitz said in a letter Thursday. “In light of the new complaint, we began a thorough examination and review of the prior incidents. As a result of this complaint and that review, the coach’s employment with Brandeis has now been terminated.”
The statement doesn’t once name Meehan, however his name has been removed from the school’s website and isn’t listed with the rest of the coaching staff.
According to a Deadspin report, one player recalled an incident where Meehan told a black player, “I’ll ship you back to Africa.” Later in that practice session, Meehan reportedly saw the same player and said, “Oh, I don’t want to sit next to him because I’ll get Ebola.”
According to an HR report obtained by Deadspin, another incident occurred on Jan. 16, 2017:
On Martin Luther King Day 2017, per the HR report, the team was running drills when one black player, who was wearing the white side of his white-black reversible practice jersey, was told by Meehan that being white must be a “dream come true” for him.
Meehan, who has led the Judges for the past 15 seasons, is the winningest coach in program history, and has led them to a Division III Final Four. The Judges finished 7-18 last season.
