The world of craft beer is both a breeding ground for experimentation and a very goofy place. When you combine those two things, you end up with things like a Lucky Charms beer that ends up being a surprise hit. But all that is mere child’s play compared to a colorful, candy-fueled beer from a Georgia brewery.
Pontoon Brewing Company just announced the upcoming release of Rainbow Smiggles, a Berliner Weisse-style brew that already wins an award for “silliest beer to order on draught.” A collaboration between the Sandy Springs, Ga. brewery and Sprayberry Bottle Shop, the tastes of both Trix and Skittles are piled into Pontoon’s existing sour beer formula to sweeten things up and induce waves of nostalgia. Fittingly given the fruity and sugary flavors of those guilty pleasure add-ins, the beer features tasting notes of strawberries, pineapple, and vanilla.

Can art is definitely a factor in getting craft beer fans to try a new brew, and Rainbow Smiggles does not disappoint. Featuring a crazed cartoon rabbit not too dissimilar from the Trix mascot at the end of a cereal and Skittles binge, the can suggests to us that such a magical beer is made by vomiting rainbows.
For Pontoon, the act of literally dumping skittles into their brewery’s vats is a way to keep the beer world from getting stale. "We’re trying to keep the market well-provided with interesting new flavors month after month," Chris Baratz, Pontoon’s head brewer told Thrillist. "Because of that, we like to push the limits and go to extremes to keep the brewers and customers excited about each new sour."
Though the outside world won’t know how Rainbow Smiggles tastes until February 7, we can at least hope that this sweetened sour brew goes down better than spicy Skittles, intentionally bad “Zombie” Skittles, or yellow Skittles, everyone’s least favorite flavor. Soon enough, you’ll be able to weigh in yourself by picking up a pint (or two or six) wherever Pontoon’s beers are sold.
