In its 195 years, a handsome masonry mansion on Governor Nicholls Street in New Orleans has played host to a fair share of notable characters, including Hollywood royals Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Now, the long-divorced former couple’s French Quarter estate is going under the hammer on December 11. The starting bid is $1 million.
Pitt and Jolie doled out $3.5 million for the property in 2006, back when the Bullet Train star was establishing the Make It Right Foundation in Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina. They sold the place in 2016, the same year Jolie filed for divorce.

The charming abode has changed hands several times since then and even counts the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen as one of its owners. At one point, the dwelling also served as a recording studio for Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and recording engineer Cosimo Matassa, and most recently, the residence was the winner of the Downtown Dwellings category on HGTV’s Ultimate House Hunt.
“The French Quarter Estate’s blend of history, modern amenities, and prime location make this an extraordinary property,” Scott Kirk, president and CEO of Interluxe Auctions, who will be spearheading the sale, told Mansion Global. Originally built in 1828, the expansive home measures 7,703 square feet and was renovated in 2017. The mansion, just steps away from the world-famous Café du Monde, includes a gated carriage-style driveway for up to two cars.
The striking Parisian-style structure is entered via French doors and opens to a foyer with harlequin tile flooring. Inside, you’ll find a total of seven bedrooms and five bathrooms, in addition to a three-story guest house. The main house is decked out with historic details like soaring high ceilings, ornate crown moldings, and sparkling crystal chandeliers, but also includes modern conveniences such as an elevator.
Highlights of the home include the gourmet chef’s kitchen, which is equipped with a wine cooler, butcher’s block island, a breakfast area, and top-of-the-line appliances. Plus, in the pantry, you’ll find windowed drawers, wine racks, and a marble counter. Elsewhere, the library stands out with its custom bookshelves and marble fireplace.
Along with a street-facing balcony that offers sweeping views up and down Governor Nicholls Street, the property is kitted out with a private central courtyard, complete with a fountain and swimming pool.
