  • The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke and star Antony Starr have responded to images of people wearing Homelander costumes at the Million MAGA March in Washington D.C. in support of Donald Trump.

  • The character of Homelander, a satirical spin on Superman, is a mass murderer and a rapist—one of the most deranged villains on television.

  • Starr Tweeted that this was "The art of ignorant dumbfuckerry."

Let's get one thing straight about Amazon Prime Video's series The Boys: Homelander, the series' villain and Superman stand-in, is evil. We're talking really evil. Like, sociopathic murderer and rapist evil. So, now that we have that established, let's talk about how a couple people spotted cosplaying as Homelander were spotted at last week's Million MAGA March in Washington, D.C. One image, shared on Twitter, has someone in a Homelander costume (with a Donald Trump cutout over their face) mock-arrested someone with a Joe Biden cutout over their face.

"Um... are they actually watching the show?" Eric Kripke, showrunner of The Boys wrote.

Antony Starr, who plays Homelander, quoted Kripke's Tweet with a response of his own: “The art of ignorant dumbfuckerry"

The Boys is filled to the brim with an exciting story and satire of the Superhero Movie Industrial Complex, but it's also not avoided the political moment at all; in fact, some of the show's best satirical writing has come in lampooning the way we've seen bases get fired up. While the Homelander character believes himself to be a wholesome, All-American Superman type, Season 2 saw his character—already a murderer and a rapist—stir up white nationalist tendencies and fall for a woman who is a literal Nazi (a Supe named Stormfront, played wonderfully by Aya Cash).

Homelander is a particularly interesting character in the world of The Boys, with much of that being owed to Starr's excellent purpose. While he is all of those things we've said he is—an evil, sociopathic rapist, murderer, and racist—the public doesn't know about this. And that's where his narcissism comes in. Homelander was developed in a lab, raised without a family, and as a result, desperately needs the adoration of the public, the majority of whom in the series still see him as a Superman-esque All-American hero. He so needs that adoration that the threat of ruining his public reputation might be the best counter-attack for the show's heroes against his super strength, ability to fly, and deadly heat vision.

The Boys has already been renewed for Season 3, which Karl Urban told Men's Health is tentatively planned to begin shooting in early 2021. Amazon Prime has also begun the production stage on a The Boys spin-off which will focus on Supes in college.
