The Boy and the Heron is now out in US cinemas, and it features Robert Pattinson’s wildest role yet.

In Studio Ghibli’s latest film he plays a talking heron, and he puts on a voice quite unlike anything you’ve heard from The Batman actor before.

In fact, even his voice director on the movie was taken aback. “When he came to our studio in L.A.,” Michael Sinterniklaas told IndieWire, “he was like, ‘OK, I’ve been thinking about this role and I recorded some stuff. Do you want to hear it?’ And he whips out his iPhone and plays some stuff that he’s just been doing in the Memos app and it was already the voice. I was like, ‘Oh, bingo, you’ve already got the character.’”

Sounding more like Wilem Dafoe than anything (which is odd in itself since Wilem Dafoe has a role in The Boy and the Heron) Pattinson’s revealed a new dimension to his game.

The film also features Christian Bale, Dave Bautista, Gemma Chan, Karen Fukuhara, Mark Hamill and Florence Pugh, and is in cinemas now.

Speaking of Batman, Pattinson will be delighted The Batman suit is coming to Batman: Arkham Knight (for free).
