These New Tree Houses in Tennessee Are a Perfect Rustic Getaway — With Outdoor Soaking Tubs and Wraparound Decks

Treetop Hideaways in Tennessee are near the deepest underground waterfall in the country.

Lookout Mountain, on the border of Tennessee and Georgia, draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year with its wondrous rock formations and underground waterfall, which look like something out of a fairy tale. And located just below it, you'll find a trio of tree houses just as whimsical as the landmarks near it.

Nestled in a lush forest, Treetop Hideaways at Ruby Falls is a family-owned retreat inspired by old-fashioned tree houses.

"My wife Hannah and I put a lot of effort into creating spaces that have the childlike creativity and imaginative playfulness that go with the concept of a tree house. Think blanket forts, attic hideouts, or a backyard clubhouse," Enoch Elwell, the property's owner, told Travel + Leisure.

While the structures definitely ooze a rustic vibe in sync with their beautiful surroundings in the wilderness, inside the spaces boast open-floor plans, oversized windows, and high ceilings, as well as many modern amenities that travelers will certainly appreciate. The Redbud Tree House, for example, has an indoor rain shower, skylights, and an outdoor soaking tub. (Don't worry, there is a privacy curtain.)

Elwell explained that all three structures were partly built with reclaimed materials and furnishings to make them more sustainable and provide "as much soul, texture, and story as possible." As a result, the spaces are completely unique and feel cozy, welcoming, and comfortable.

All tree houses come with kitchenettes, stocked mini-fridges, local snacks, artisan coffee, plush towels, and bathroom toiletries, while under them, guests will find private smokeless firepits, seating, firewood, and s'more kits. Travelers can also book additional services like massages, guided hiking tours, laundry service, and wine and spirits delivery.

Our favorite is the Wood Lily Tree House, which has a bookcase with a secret door, a hammock, a wraparound deck, and an outdoor shower.

"The best part about our tree houses is found in all of the little details full of so much love and care, which is really something that you've just got to experience," Elwell said, noting that winter is one of the best times of the year to visit the area.

"There's something nice about going for a hike in the forest in cool weather and coming back to a cozy space and a warm campfire," he added. "Spring is also a glorious time with wildflowers blanketing the forest floor and redbud and dogwood blooms surrounding the tree houses."

The property is also close to Chattanooga, making it the perfect base to explore the historic city and all its museums, including the National Medal of Honor Heritage Center, the Tennessee Aquarium, wineries, distilleries, and other landmarks.
