Bourdain's Death Inspires Stars To Speak Out
The world is still reeling from the news that celebrity chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain was found dead yesterday at age 61. CNN reported that the cause of death was suicide, which comes just days after fashion designer Kate Spade was found dead in under similar circumstances.
As the world mourns, social media has been filled with pleas for people to reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK). The news has also inspired celebrities like Patton Oswalt and comedian Rob Delaney to share their own battles with depression as a way to try to break down some of the stigma around the topic. I’ve brushed up against this darkness and I know it’s a tempting exit but REACH OUT to ANYONE. Stay on this side of it - in the light and warmth. Where you get to try again, every day.- Patton Oswalt (@pattonoswalt) June 8, 2018
❤️A couple things I’ve written about my depression & how I’ve grappled with the urge to kill myself.

In recovery suicide is often referred to as “a permanent solution to a temporary problem.”

In my deepest, darkest post-partum depression, I would have personally never called a phone number. If John or my doctor never reached out, I would have never even known. It really can be a lonely hole. Watch the people you love and don’t be afraid to speak up.

When I was in Junior High, my mother's drinking and depression turned suicidal. Cops were called. She was taken to Bellevue. When insurance ran out she was sent home, a Thorazine zombie. The entire time this went on I was so ashamed I told NO ONE. 1/2

Years later, in my own depression, I sought therapy, and then a friend dragged me to Al-Anon. I began to learn "you're only as sick as your secrets." Life changed. We all need to help each other remove the stigma that accompanies mental illness. 2/2

With Kate Spade and now Anthony Bourdain, two reminders: you can't always tell from outside what a person is going through. And from inside depression, you can't see that there's a way out, although there is. The National Suicide Prevention Hotline: 1-800-273-8255.

watching someone like anthony bourdain experience different cultures, people & food with unmitigated curiosity and joy helped me through my own depression and my sometimes-tortured relationship with food. RIP
