Boston University Has a New Comfort Dog and They Need Help Picking Her Name

There's a reason why dogs are considered man's best friend. They really do bring us a lot of comfort when times are tough. In fact, Boston University in Massachusetts has a team of comfort dogs at the ready to help out when students are stressed or in need. They recently added a new pup to the force and turned to students and people online for help naming their new "staff member."

The school announced the new addition of the Boston University police force on February 7. She's definitely the cutest member of the team.

The dog wasn't even two months old yet, she really is a puppy! But two months is admittedly a long time to go without a name. Thankfully Instagram exists, so the school turned to the internet for help.

"We need your help, Terriers! We’re welcoming a new four-legged team member to the @BUPolice fam, and she needs a name that’s as cute as she is!" the post on Instagram reads.

Part of the dog's responsibilities are being there for students during finals (ya' know, with lots of cuddles), "bringing smiles to events on campus, and offering comfort to those in need."

Because she is still so young and getting trained, the dog will only be on campus on Fridays. Starting in July she'll be around twice a week and hopefully will be full-time in the fall.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves, this puppy needed a name! In a second post on Instagram, the school revealed what the winner was.

"The results are in! We would like to officially introduce you to Bean, our new @BostonU community resource dog," it reads.

Bean! How fitting for Boston.

All About Police Comfort Dogs

So what are police comfort dogs? They've actually become a pretty common practice on school campuses. Like therapy dogs, these are pups are special kinds of therapy pooches that often help out in schools. These dogs can also provide emotional support in other settings, or for victims and witnesses of criminal events. They also help people who have been through emotional tragedies too.

In a school setting, pups like Bean can help students who are stressed, anxious, or are suffering from poor mental health. They can really make a difference in a young person's life.

On Instagram, people were gushing about the BU comfort dog's new moniker. "YESSSS THATS MY GIRL BEAN!!" one person cheered. "Best name! Adorbs!" a second commenter added. "Aww I love Bean already," a third person chimed in.

Looks like Bean is one of the BU family already.
