Boris Johnson Reveals What Queen Elizabeth Told Him About the Prime Minister Position

Queen Elizabeth and her new prime minister Boris Johnson didn't exactly start out on the right foot.

First, Johnson's election forced the British monarch to delay her summer vacation to Scotland. The Queen usually begins her weeks-long annual holiday at Balmoral Castle in late July, but she had to postpone the trip in order to meet with her government's new leader.

It was an unfortunate bit of timing, but as always, duty comes first for the Queen. That said, she's likely to be less forgiving about Johnson sharing details of their private discussions with others.

According to reporter Vincent McAviney, the new Prime Minister was speaking freely about their conversation during a tour of his new residence, 10 Downing Street.

"I don’t know why anyone would want the job," Queen Elizabeth reportedly told him. "The PM revealed it during a tour in Number 10 before being told off by staff not to repeat those things so loudly," McAviney shared on Twitter.

For her part, the Queen kept things professional on social media, posting about her meeting with Johnson in the most general of terms.

"The Queen, this afternoon, received The Right Honourable Boris Johnson MP in an Audience and requested him to form a new Administration," explained a post on the royal family's Instagram account this afternoon.

The photo's caption also confirmed that the British monarch met with Theresa May today, and received her resignation.

"The Queen also received The Right Honourable Theresa May MP who tendered her resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury. Her Majesty was graciously pleased to accept the resignation," it read.

In total, Queen Elizabeth has seen 14 different prime ministers over the course of her reign, beginning with Winston Churchill, who held the position when she ascended the throne in 1952. She will reportedly head to Scotland later this week.
