A “Boring Beige” Laundry Room Gets a Cheery “Pastel Perfection” Makeover

Sure laundry rooms don’t have to be glamorous, but when your chore spaces — like sinks, supply closets, desks, and laundry rooms — look cheery, perhaps you’ll be cheerier when doing said chores.
Prior to its makeover, Australia-based homeowner Rhiannon Smyth’s laundry room was kind of a stressful place to be. “The laundry before was very cluttered, had little storage, and was very boring,” she says, calling the walls “boring beige.”
However, post-renovation, it’s “pastel perfection,” as Rhiannon writes on Instagram. Rhiannon and her husband, Luke, hired pros to help with their laundry room renovation labor (although Luke, a pro plumber, did all the plumbing work), and Rhiannon designed the layout and selected all the finishes.
The number-one priority was cabinetry.
“We knew we had the space to add cabinets and make it feel bigger,” Rhiannon says — and plus, cabinets would help conceal the clutter and add much-needed storage.
Rhiannon and Luke selected shiny white laminate cabinets from Polytec for their laundry room and added brass hardware throughout. “We absolutely love it,” she says. “It feels much bigger, and we now have cupboards to put things in instead of on the floor!”
The makeover added much-needed functionality.
Rhiannon says the cabinets made the biggest difference in the redo, but the large stone countertop for folding and the pull-out faucet have also made the laundry room much more functional for her family of five.
Rhiannon says she “would highly recommend” the latter and also recommends shopping around for your hardware to make sure you’re getting the best deals possible.
The tile backsplash adds a pop of glam.
Lastly, Rhiannon says the pink mosaic tile backsplash — called “Kit Kat” after the candy bar it resembles! — gave the laundry room “the pop of color it needed to blend in with the rest of [her] eclectic modern home.” The tile is from Tile Cloud.
Rhiannon’s last bit of advice is that it’s “important to get a tile sample, benchtop sample, and cabinet sample to see if they all work together before you start.” Her pink tiles, stone countertop, white cabinetry, and pops of gold all look meant-to-be.
