Bodie and more pets up for adoption in Phoenix-area shelters this week

Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.

Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

Lucky: Former stray looking for a forever home

At just one-and-a-half years old, Lucky could still be considered a bit of a puppy herself. Incredibly, this sweet girl has already given birth and raised eight puppies of her own.

Lucky the Pit Bull Terrier mix was brought to the Arizona Humane Society as a stray along with another mama dog and 15 puppies in March of this year. Both families went into the shelter’s Mutternity Suites, a quiet, medically supervised area for pregnant and nursing mother dogs to care for their babies until they are able to go to a Foster Hero home.

After about two months of care in the shelter and a loving foster home, Lucky did a wonderful job raising her babies but it is now her turn to be treated like a baby in her future forever home. Understandably, this beautiful girl can be a bit shy at first but warms up quickly with patience and is a very social, friendly and playful pup once she learns to trust her people.

Thanks to the BISSELL Pet Foundation, all dogs six months and older have $0 adoption fees through Friday, May 10. Interested adopters can meet the lovely Lucky at AHS’ new Papago Park Campus. Her waived adoption fee includes her spay surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip, and a follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. Visit azhumane.org/adopt for more information.

Tomato and Her Potato: Mother and son need a foster hero

In honor of Mother’s Day, you can help Tomato raise her little Potato in a loving, quiet environment by becoming a Foster Hero for them, The adorable duo will need about a month of fostering until Potato is old enough to be on her own.

The mother/son pair made their way to the Arizona Humane Society earlier this year as sick strays when a Good Samaritan found them with kitty colds in early May. They are currently being treated in AHS’s new Meowternity Suites, a quiet, medically supervised area for pregnant and nursing mom cats. This area is an innovative way to help save even more homeless pets in our community.

Two-year-old Tomato and four-week-old Potato would greatly benefit from a home where they have their own space to continue healing while getting lots of TLC. The lovely mama kitty is also a bit on the shy side and would love to have a cat-savvy family that helps her come out of her shell and learn to trust her human friends.

It is easy and free to become an AHS Foster Hero with cases that fit every family and lifestyle. By bringing in a foster pet(s), you allow AHS to continue caring for even more of our community’s sick, injured and abused pets by opening up much-needed kennel space. For more information on how to become a Foster Hero, visit azhumane.org/foster to take the online orientation and apply.

Bodie: Loaded with good manners

Bodie is a 6-year-old, 29-pound Parson Russell blend who joined Friends for Life Animal Rescue by way of the Humane Society of Yuma. He was surrendered there due to circumstances beyond his control. He's a bit energetic, typical of his breed, and he's hoping to score a forever home soon. He does not do well with cats, so he'll do best in a feline-free home. Bodie has excellent leash manners and is rumored to enjoy being a lap dog. He knows basic commands, such as "sit," and is a gentleman when receiving a treat.

How to adopt: Bodie is residing at Friends for Life's adoption center located at 952 W. Melody Lane in Gilbert and would be thrilled to meet you, anytime during regular adoption center hours. Bodie is neutered, licensed, microchipped and current on vaccinations. His adoption fee is $250.
