A bobblehead of Delaware State University Hornet Too-Fly is available in new HBCU series

The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum in Milwaukee has released its first HBCU bobblehead series, and a familiar Delaware face is among the new miniatures.

The latest release, which includes officially licensed bobbleheads of 13 historically Black colleges and universities, features appearances from the Alabama A&M Bulldogs, North Carolina A&T State University Aggies, Tuskegee University Golden Tigers, Howard University Bison and more in celebration of Black History Month.

The Delaware State University Hornets in Dover, represented by mascot Too-Fly, also sit pretty among the HBCU lineup.

"We’re excited to release this long-overdue collection of HBCU bobbleheads,” said National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum co-founder and CEO Phil Sklar. “We know these bobbleheads, which celebrate the rich history of these 13 amazing institutions, will be very popular with the alumni, students, faculty, staff, fans, and communities.”

Each bobblehead stands on a base with the school’s nickname across the front and depicts the mascot proudly wearing school colors in front of a backing featuring the school logo.

The bobbleheads sell for $35 each plus a shipping fee of $8 per order and are individually numbered up to 2,023. They are only available through the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum’s online store at store.bobbleheadhall.com.

The Too-Fly bobblehead, along with a few other HBCU releases from Grambling State, Alabama State and Howard University, is scheduled to arrive via preorder in April. The rest will ship in June.

The release of the Too-Fly bobblehead comes right on the heels of a limited-edition bobblehead drop in January that featured the University of Delaware’s Blue Hen mascot YoUDee.

Although this might be Too-Fly's first time as a famous bobblehead, Delaware’s favorite Hornet has long been in the local spotlight. And with a name like that, Too-Fly deserves all the buzz.

According to DSU archives, the current sly-grinned design of the school’s mascot wasn’t always the mighty Hornet’s look.

Previously referred to as the DSU Hornet, the mascot underwent a name change in 2011 as part of a “tremendous makeover” after the school’s athletic department asked students to vote on a new name for the mascot, which would be decided at that year’s homecoming football game.

Despite contenders like Homey Hambone the Hornet, SWARMman Stinger, Havoc the Hornet, Buzzie and Walter the Hornet, among countless others, Oct. 29, 2011, was the official creation of Too-Fly the Hornet.

Since then, the fierce blue-and-red mascot has been seen around DSU’s campus in Dover at various sporting events and school-sanctioned activities, as well as guest appearances around the state, spreading a little swagger wherever it goes, perhaps just to prove Too-Fly may really be too fly for us all.
