Bob Dylan has broken his silence on the death of his friend and former guitarist Robbie Robertson.

In a statement shared with Billboard, the artist gave his reaction to the passing of Robertson, who performed with him on tour as a member of The Band, and collaborated with the 82-year-old on various albums, including Dylan's iconic record Blonde on Blonde.

"This is shocking news," said Dylan. "Robbie was a lifelong friend. His passing leaves a vacancy in the world."

Robertson passed away on Aug. 9 at 80 years old. His longtime manager Jared Levine confirmed the news on social media, noting that the late musician died surrounded by his family at home in Los Angeles. His final project was composing for Martin Scorsese's upcoming film, Killers of the Flower Moon.

Upon the news of Robertson's passing, Scorsese shared a statement with various outlets, including NBC News, remembering his friend and frequent collaborator, who worked as a music producer and composer for various of the filmmaker's projects.

"Robbie Robertson was one of my closest friends, a constant in my life and my work. I could always go to him as a confidante. A collaborator. An advisor. I tried to be the same for him," said Scorsese.

He continued, "Long before we ever met, his music played a central role in my life—me and millions and millions of other people all over this world. The Band’s music, and Robbie’s own later solo music, seemed to come from the deepest place at the heart of this continent, its traditions and tragedies and joys."
