DC’s movie lineup in recent years has had a bit of a habit of falling under the radar. Sure, The Batman was a pretty high-profile release, but The Flash absolutely bombed at the box office, and the company’s efforts in TV have pretty much fallen on deaf ears. No DC property has gone more overlooked, though, than the recent Blue Beetle movie.

I’m going to be honest, I only found out that Blue Beetle was even showing in cinemas because I saw merch for it at my local pop culture store about a week ago. I like Blue Beetle! It’s one of my favorite DC superhero lines. But somehow, with lackluster marketing and basically zero word of mouth, the movie came and went without me noticing (technically it’s still available in Australian cinemas, but the times are awful so what can you do?).

Not only did it release in cinemas two months ago in the US, but it’s now also available digitally. You can buy, rent, or watch the movie on your favorite movie marketplace right now. Who knew, right? All two hours and change of Blue Beetle, available at your fingertips, already.

Look, it’s no surprise, really, that it flew under the radar. As I said, there hasn’t really been that much in the way of marketing for the film, and it did not do well at all at the box office. The movie made $125 million worldwide against a budget of $104 million, almost certainly losing the studio a bunch of money when you factor in marketing costs.

Blue Beetle also got pretty mixed reviews, but did fall just slightly onto the positive side of things. Critics praised the film for its strong focus on its family dynamics, decent action scenes, and strong acting, though its over-reliance on CGI and heavy cliches. Still, there are definitely worse ways to spend a couple of hours.

For those who’d rather hold the film in their own two hands, a physical release on Blu-Ray (UHD and otherwise) and DVD will be available on October 31, 2023.
