Country music fans got a little confused over the weekend as many fell for a fake article about Blake Shelton published by a satirical website. The story involved Shelton and the ongoing controversy surrounding Jason Aldean and his song "Try That In A Small Town."
The website Dunning-Kruger Times, which states on its About Us page that "Everything on this website is fiction," posted an article entitled, "Blake Shelton Cancels $30 Million Project With CMT: 'Jason Is My Friend.'"
The satirical article reads, "Country Music Television (CMT) is still paying the price for canceling Jason Aldean’s video 'Try That In a Small Town.' In what may be the most crushing blow yet, country megastar Blake Shelton has announced that he’s backing out of a $30 million project with the network."
This comes after Aldean was heavily criticized for both the music video for "Try That In A Small Town," due to the imagery included along with the shooting location, and the lyrics, which some, like Sheryl Crow, felt was "promoting violence."
Unfortunately, some country music fans didn't understand that the article about Shelton was fake, tweeting in support of the country artist's alleged protest on social media.
A man whose Twitter username is @LarryDJonesJr tweeted about the article, adding commentary praising Shelton, saying, "Welcome back to your Oklahoma values! Great change from Garth Brooks! @blakeshelton."
The comment about Garth Brooks seems to be in reference to the singer's video with Trisha Yearwood in partnership with Global Citizen made last year asking for donations for refugees from Ukraine, as well as other recent satirical articles from Dunning-Kruger Times.
Soon after, context was added by other Twitter users under the post explaining, "Thus was originally reported on a satirical website. It is not factual."

Many went on to cheer Shelton's falsely alleged actions in the replies, with one writing, "When men stick to their morals, great things happen. Well done Mr. Aldean and Mr. Shelton!"
"Way to go, Blake Shelton!!!" said another.
More fans on social media fell for the fake article about Shelton, as well as several more satirical articles about Luke Bryan and Hank Williams Jr. participating in similar CMT protests.
A fan cheered, "It is so great to see people fighting back," about the article, with similarly supportive replies like, "Gonna be buying somma his music now, too!" But soon enough, many clarified that it was not real.

Despite what some country music fans might wish was true, as of writing, Shelton, Bryan, and Williams Jr. have not spoken out in support of or against Aldean and the controversy regarding his song.
