  • The Voice season 20 premieres March 1, 2021 on NBC.

  • For the new season, Nick Jonas is coaching in place of Gwen Stefani and alongside Blake Shelton, John Legend, and Kelly Clarkson.

  • Nick had previously coached on The Voice in season 18 and left before season 19.

  • Here's how Blake feels about Nick coming back to the singing show.

Blake Shelton is not holding back when it comes to Nick Jonas returning to The Voice.

As announced last fall, The Jonas Brothers band member is coming back for season 20 of the NBC competition show after briefly joining in season 18 and departing ahead of season 19. Now that he's back, he's taking Gwen Stefani's red swivel chair in between returning coaches Kelly Clarkson and John Legend — something that Blake has thoughts about.

"I mean, it's kind of sucky having Nick back as a coach. I mean, he already had one chance to prove himself. He failed miserably," Blake joked to ET Canada ahead of The Voice season 20 premiere on March 1.

In between a flashback clip of Nick coaching from season 18, Blake quipped, "Out of fairness, I guess, the network wants to give this kid another opportunity to prove himself. It's embarrassing for Nick, I think."

While we know Blake is very competitive on The Voice, it seems pretty clear that Blake is kidding around when it comes to harping on Nick. Then again, it's very possible that Blake is feeling a little insecure about getting beat by the "Sucker" singer. After all, Nick's team member Thunderstorm Artis came in a close second right behind Blake's singing mentee Todd Tilghman in the season 18 finale. If we had to guess, Blake is probably a bit nervous about Nick as his competition — that, or perhaps the country star is bummed about not getting to coach alongside his fiancée.

Regardless, Nick sounds like he's up for the challenge and is motivated more than ever to prove himself to Blake and the rest of the coaching squad.

"My last season, after getting to the finale and losing to Blake, that hurt," Nick told the outlet. "The second thing I have to prove this year is, I'm the youngest coach on this panel ... it was really exciting to hear people underestimate me as a coach and to give them something to root for. So to all the new Team Nick fans out there, I want to say 'thank you' and I want to make you proud."
