The Blacklist fans, be ready to mourn with Red (James Spader).

Season 9 of the hit NBC drama is officially premiering on October 21, and the first glimpse of it features an emotional Red torn up about Elizabeth “Liz” Keen (Megan Boone). The season 8 finale showed Liz bouncing back from a bullet wound and she was getting ready to take over Red’s criminal empire. He revealed that he was dying and wanted her to be his successor. But moments before the transfer of power happened, Liz was brought to her knees again by another bullet and the new Blacklist trailer confirmed everyone’s biggest fears — the former FBI agent died.

“After Elizabeth’s death, there’s nothing,” Red declares. “Liz died for what? The Blacklist. Whether she died in vain is up to you,” Agent Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff) says. “This journey isn’t over yet,” Red replies.

Upon watching the 14-second clip with Liz’s final heartbreaking scene, Blacklist fans quickly understood what it was implying and it caught many off-guard. “Keen died??!!!!!!” one person wrote. “So she really died 😭,” another added. “She’s really dead!!! 😢😢😢😢,” a different fan said. “Excuse meeeee!! 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯,” a follower commented. “Wow I knew she was leaving but didn’t think it would be by death,” someone else mentioned.

What’s more, other folks took Red’s words as a warning that he would be avenging Liz. He immediately killed the man who shot LIz in the back, but something tells us that this wasn't enough for him to move on. “Red is coming 🔥🔥🔥,” a fan wrote. “Someone’s going to pay! 🔥,” another said, repeating season 9’s slogan. “Can’t wait to see where season 9 takes us,” added a different person.

Ahead of the season 8 finale this past June, news broke that lead actress Megan Boone would not be reprising her role as Liz and she was leaving The Blacklist after eight years. According to Deadline, she was in discussions with the show’s writers before season 9 was in the works and it gave them lots of time to come up with a thoughtful ending to Liz’s story.

On the day her final episode aired, Megan shared her gratitude with everyone who helped make this chapter of her life feel like “a dream.” In part, she wrote on Instagram, “This experience, for me, has been an entire life inside of my own life. These eight years playing Liz Keen have helped me better define the world and myself, as she set out to do the same … As her story ends I am grateful, most of all for the people I shared this time with: my fellow cast members present and past, our incredible crew who carried every single day for all involved, and those of you we entertained.”

As for what’s to next, TVLine reports that the hit drama will pick up after a two-year jump. Now, without Liz, Red is on the run and the FBI task force has disbanded. So, what will her death mean for the Blacklist? We’ll just have to tune in to find out.
