The Blackening 2 Is in the Works at Lionsgate

Tim Story's The Blackening was released earlier this year and made waves.

Almost quadrupling its $5 million budget at the worldwide box office, the film follows seven friends who go away for the weekend and end up trapped in a cabin with a killer with a vendetta.

Now, MRC and Lionsgate have entered talks with the film's writers, Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins and producer E. Brian Dobbs, about developing a sequel.

With an ensemble cast featuring Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, Melvin Gregg, X Mayo, Dewayne Perkins, Antionette Robertson, Sinqua Walls, Jay Pharoah, Yvonne Orji, Diedrich Bader, James Preston Rogers and George Fisher the film was a hit among critics and audiences.

The Blackening landed an 87% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes where it was described as "one of the silliest, smartest and most memorable comedies of 2023".

Perkins revealed to Variety that there could be a whole host of films from The Blackening universe, saying they would feature the "Same group, sprinkle in some new people...I feel like we've got something good, and I love the dynamic, but fresh blood always turns things up a little bit".
