Black state senator claims a woman called the police on him for 'fighting back Trump'
State Sen. Jesse Hamilton, a Democrat who represents the 20th New York Senate District, says that a woman called 911 on him and accused him of for “dividing people” while he was campaigning. Her reasoning? He was handing out literature that said “Fighting back Trump.”
While Hamilton was handing out campaign palm cards in Brooklyn on Thursday morning, a woman approached the senator and a campaign staffer to confront them over the slogan.
The staffer was able to capture some of the confrontation on video, which was then uploaded to Sen. Hamilton’s Facebook page.
The woman can be heard saying in broken English, “I support Trump,” and “I see the difference between Democrat and Republican, and I see the difference between you and Trump. You have no difference from all others, OK? So if I would not see this slogan…”
She went on to say, “If they really wants nation be as one and fight for the better life and live the better life you would not put [“Fight back Trump”] here. Because this is what Democrats do, exactly.”
After the woman walked away, law enforcement confirmed to the New York Post that the woman called the police around 8 a.m. to complain about the senator and his opposition to Trump’s immigration policy.
When police arrived, they explained to the unnamed woman that Hamilton was not breaking any laws.
Sen. Jesse Hamilton wrote on his Facebook post (explanatory links have been added by Yahoo): “A Trump supporter called the police on me today, my crime was speaking to constituents about immigration and Trump’s racist policies.
“The pattern of targeting Black men and women for being Black and alive in the communities we all share has to stop. This pattern of calling the police on Black people going about their business and participating in the life of our country has to stop. From a student taking a break at Yale, to a student eating lunch at Smith College, to a child selling lemonade, to a person having a barbecue in Oakland, to an Oregon state legislator knocking on doors – the list goes on and on. I will continue to speak to neighborhood residents about the important work we must accomplish together – including changing a culture of targeting Black men and women for living while Black.”
