Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman died after a four-year battle with colon cancer, according to the Associated Press. The actor was 43.

“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much,” his family said in a statement published by the AP. “From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more- all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther.”

Boseman was born on November 29, 1977 in Anderson, South Carolina. He attended Howard University to study theater and went on to appear in four Marvel films, including Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther, the latter for which he received a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
