'Black Mirror' Could Return for a Seventh Season of Existential Dread

Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker's speculative and often prescient anthology series which explores all the different ways in which technology can bring out the absolute worst in human beings—think The Twilight Zone but with the existential horror somehow dialled up even higher—just returned to Netflix with a sixth round of cautionary tales.

"Partly as a challenge, and partly to keep things fresh for both me and the viewer, I began this season by deliberately upending some of my own core assumptions about what to expect," Brooker told Tudum. "Consequently, this time, alongside some of the more familiar Black Mirror tropes we’ve also got a few new elements, including some I’ve previously sworn blind the show would never do, to stretch the parameters of what 'a Black Mirror episode' even is. The stories are all still tonally Black Mirror through-and-through — but with some crazy swings and more variety than ever before."

Will there be a Season 7 of Black Mirror?

Netflix has yet to officially renew the series, although if the initial viewer response to this latest batch of episodes is anything to go by, it is only a matter of time. And the un-serialized nature of Black Mirror means that the potential for future stories is limited only by Brooker's deeply twisted imagination.

"I’ve always felt that Black Mirror should feature stories that are entirely distinct from one another, and keep surprising people — and myself — or else what’s the point?" he said. "It should be a series that can’t be easily defined, and can keep reinventing itself."

Who will be in the cast?

Given the anthology format of the show, it's unlikely that any familiar faces will be returning from this or any other season. While certain pieces of fictional technology have recurred in multiple episodes, as well as the occasional oblique reference which lends credence to the theory that all of these stories take place in the same vast, depressing universe, if and when Season 7 comes along, it will almost certainly feature a brand new cast.

And there will undoubtedly be some big names in there: Black Mirror may have started as a relatively small-scale Channel 4 property in the UK, but as it has grown in popularity it has attracted the star power of performers like John Hamm, Miley Cyrus, Salma Hayek, Jesse Plemons, Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Bryce Dallas Howard.

When will Season 7 be released?

Fans have had to wait four whole years between Season 5 and 6, a gap which can at least be partially explained by widespread delays that faced Hollywood due to COVID shutdowns. While that was a unique scenario, there has frequently been a long hiatus between seasons of Black Mirror. In the meantime, if you're craving a hit of anxiety-inducing content about the threats of social media and artificial intelligence, there's always the news.
