Black Matte Is the New Red And Green
Contrary to popular belief, holiday decorations don't have to be red and green. In fact, you might like the look of a bolder color palette more so than the traditional tones you're used to seeing. Take it straight from Emily Henderson, who upgraded her Christmas dining room tablescape to be festive, modern, and one that'll leave you inspired.
"Decorating with red and green during the holiday season is classic and is represented elsewhere in our home this year. I wanted to create a more clean, elegant-looking feel that could live on past Christmas," explains Emily, who used black flatware with stoneware plates featuring black pine tree illustrations. "These plates are super festive, but don't feel overtly holiday and can be used past December 25," says Emily. Here are her three steps for interviewing:
1. Use greenery wherever you can.
"For this setting, I chose to use real greens, but I also love this super realistic faux fur alternative from Target. I got these at a flower market, for like $6 a bunch, but you can get a lot from Christmas tree farms or grocery stores."
2. Take advantage of natural light.
"Candles help set the mood and give off the most brilliant light. They can instantly elevate a gathering. I love these Hearth & Hand with Magnolia taper holders because they are adjustable."
3. Mix textures.
"I love the contrast between refined and rustic. It can help a setting feel less formal and gives off a more 'collected over time' vibe. I love the way the ceramic and stoneware pieces complement each other here."
Of course, to each is own. "Decorating for the holidays should be about whatever brings you joy. If that's traditional red and green, go for it. For me, I like playing with different colors and trends. It's about updating the classics to feel contemporary, but still cozy and welcoming," she says.
