What does Black Joy mean to us? When Dominican-American writer Kleaver Cruz coined the phrase in their book The Black Joy Project, it went viral. The words represented resistance as joy, resistance as relishing life.

For others, there may be irony in celebrating in the face of injustice. For us, it's natural.

In Kindred’s inaugural issue, you’ll see that Black Joy is everything—from the unsolicited compliments we share to traditions like double dutch and hand games to praising Him in advance, as our cover star Kelly Rowland does. As you’ll learn, for Rowland, joyful parenting has been a conscious, internal process and the product of the hard work that followed. All of these elements made her a natural fit for the cover star of Kindred’s first digital issue.
