This Black Cat Turned Out to be the True Star of ‘Monday Night Football’
A black cat somehow got on the field during the Cowboys-Giants Week 9 Monday Night Football game.
The game was stopped momentarily as the cat got off the field.
Apparently, there are usually stray cats in and around MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The most exciting touchdown during the Week 9 Dallas Cowboys beatdown of the New York Giants wasn't on a pass from Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, or Giants running back Saquon Barkley; no, the most exciting moment during Monday Night Football this week was when a black cat somehow appeared on the field—halting the game—and ran across, eventually scoring a touchdown.
This was easily the highlight of a game that saw Dallas handily take care of their divisional rivals, the Giants. Reporter Madelyn Burke found out that the cats do typically reside at MetLife. "Asked building security about the black cat on the field: Apparently there are some resident stray cats at MetLife— they usually come out after the game, people feed them, etc. They live in the bleachers, I’m told this one must have gotten startled out by fan noise #journalism," she wrote.

She also made clear that the MetLife staff will find the cat and make sure it's doing OK.
Statement from MetLife Stadium on status of the black cat that ran onto the field at the Giants-Dallas game:
“The black cat ran off the field and disappeared under a seating section. Once we locate and safely capture the cat, we will take it to a veterinarian for examination”— Madelyn Burke (@MadelynBurke) November 5, 2019
It started easy enough, as the cat appeared with 5:32 remaining to play in the game's second quarter. At that point, the Giants were winning 9-3, but it should be noted that from the moment the cat appeared and crossed the goal line and onward, the Cowboys went on a dominating 34-9 run. Maybe the Cowboys will start bringing cats to more games to replicate the success? Who's to say, but we do know sports are superstitious.
When the cat first got to the field, it was clear that fans were befuddled:

But the best part of the whole thing was when announcer Kevin Harlan, who calls the Monday Night Football games for Westwood One radio, called the cat's run just as he would a player's. Truly epic stuff.
Kevin Harlan's Westwood One radio call of the cat on the field is, as you might expect, an all-time great call. How much of a pro is Harlan? He worked a sponsor read into it. pic.twitter.com/3x0MVNEHNY

"If a black cat runs on the field during a Monday Night Football game... you might as well call it quits, bro," Cowboys star defensive end Demarcus Lawrence said after the game. "'Cause your luck is terrible."

The memes started running online almost as fast as the cat did. Shannon Sharpe was one of the targets here, and he elevated it to his followers.

But as ESPN Senior Writer Don Van Natta best put it, in a Tweet, "You're remembered for the rules you break." We won't soon forget you, Monday Night Football cat, and we salute you.
