Thanksgiving will creep up fast this year, landing on November 23—over a full week before the month ends. If you haven’t already prepared for the holiday, this is the week to start planning, and for many of us, that begins with creating a budget.

Grocery stores and warehouse clubs are very aware of two things: that the cost of food has greatly increased over the past three years and that people tend to spend more money on food during the holidays. Of course, each store wants you to spend your entire Thanksgiving food budget at its own store.

Walmart is dropping its Thanksgiving prices to pre-inflation numbers. Aldi is slashing the prices on many regularly purchased Thanksgiving foods by 50 percent. Other grocery stores give away free main dishes such as turkeys, hams, lasagnas, and even Tofurkeys if you spend a certain amount in the weeks leading up to the holiday. Not to be left behind, BJ’s Wholesale Club just announced it's giving away free turkeys for members who spend a certain amount in one shopping order, but the amount is pretty reasonable.

How to Get a Free Thanksgiving Turkey at BJ’s Wholesale Club

BJ’s members who shop in-store or online from November 1-9 and spend $150 in the same transaction will get a digital coupon for a free fresh or frozen Butterball whole turkey. It’s that simple.

While the window for earning the free turkey isn’t very long, the requirement of spending $150 to earn the free turkey is far less than many grocery stores’ requirements. Grocery stores such as Giant, ShopRite, Acme, Foodtown, and Weis require shoppers to spend $400 to earn a free turkey or other main dish, according to The Krazy Coupon Lady.

Plus, any BJ’s member knows that spending $150 at the warehouse store is not difficult to do. Buying items in larger quantities makes your total add up quickly. But, if you find yourself needing to purchase a little extra to reach the $150 requirement, you can always add on nonperishable items such as toilet paper, toothpaste, or bath soap. The price of certain items such as alcohol, tobacco products, lottery tickets, and gift cards are not eligible to be put toward the total needed for the free turkey

Once BJ’s members meet the requirement, the free turkey coupon will appear in their digital coupon gallery beginning on November 11. Members must redeem their coupon by November 22, 2023, and BJ’s does say the coupon is only good “while supplies last,” so it may be better to purchase the turkey sooner rather than later.

Once you have your free turkey secured, it’s time to start planning all those wonderful Thanksgiving sides such as sweet potato casserole, rolls, and cranberry sauce. Hitting up Walmart or Aldi for the ingredients for those side dishes may be a smart idea to help you stick with your budget.
