Whatever happened to boring old cleavage, when your chest was hoisted up in a corseted mermaid gown?

The 59th Annual Grammy Awards, that’s what. We had Demi Lovato, Lady Gaga, Halsey, and scores of others baring their bosoms in ways we have not seen before. We’ve seen underboob and sideboob, for sure, but Sunday night a new trend emerged — we will call it centerboob — where stars exposed a bare strip of skin running from neck to navel.

Lovato admitted on social media that her Julien Macdonald dress was see-through. The crocheted number sure left little to the imagination, putting her bosom front and center.

Being corseted into your second-skin dress is never fun, so Halsey took the opposite approach with her blue leisure suit. Some said it reminded them of TLC. Others, Eminem. Whatever the case, she took the prize for least-constricted in her blue satin jacket.

Carrie Underwood’s Golden Globes number wasn’t a hit with fans, but fast-forward to the Grammys and wowza! The country star’s Elie Madi frock had a liberal keyhole cut.

We really, truly, honestly had no idea that Armani Privé could be this sexy. But Rihanna, queen of making everything bend to her wishes, proved it to be so in this orange number that accentuated her assets to their full potential. She had the most fun at the Grammys, sipping from her flask and hanging with Blue Ivy Carter.

Leave it to Lady Gaga to take the whole underboob concept and make it her own. She paired an Alex Ulichny bolero with sky-high boots and enough attitude to squash those residual and post-Super Bowl body shamers.

Behold Beyoncé in custom Peter Dundas, with the plunge to there. Adorably enough, she’s hoisting twin Grammys. This is pretty traditional in terms of low-cut gowns, but on Beyoncé, it’s va-va-va-voom times two.

“A lot of things are happening right now. We’re all getting ‘political’ and wanting to show our ‘voice,’” stylist Jessica Paster tells Yahoo Style. “Are we trying to be sexy? Are we trying to be: ‘We are woman, let us roar’?”

That’s a fair question, especially given the amount of skin on display at the Grammys. And here’s the thing: When you wear items that can slide off with one ill-advised movement, double-sided fashion tape won’t keep anything in place. “With the moisture and sweat, they’ll fall. The only thing that works is gaffer’s tape. That literally tears your skin off,” says Paster, who styles Ruby Rose and Emily Blunt.

Paster makes a strong point that in many cases, less is more. And that has nothing to do with body shaming or needing a bikini bod before venturing out on the red carpet. “An underboob — is that necessary? I don’t think certain cuts are necessary to make dresses be sensual,” says Paster. “There’s a way to do it that’s sexy and sensual as opposed to just letting it all hang out.”

The night’s sexiest star, per Paster? A mom of three clad in green Zuhair Murad, with a major low-cut front. “You know who schooled these young [women]? Celine Dion. She did it perfect. It made sense. It fit her beautifully,” says Paster.
