If you know somebody who has a fireproof safe, hidden behind a fake bookcase door, and locked so securely Cat Woman would be dissuaded from picking it, I'd love to hear more about it. Did it cost thousands? Does it contain the crown jewels? Did it come with the mansion? I'd be equally interested in anyone who buys one of those fake books with the hollowed-out center you can find all over Amazon. Does that feel that it is more secure than stuffing money in the mattress?

I was looking for the middle ground when I started Googling around for small, renter-friendly safes for stashing the shit that's important to me. The middle ground was hard to find. But at CES 2021, the biggest tech expo of the year, a company called Trova debuted a biometric home safe you can bolt to the ground. That was still too large and permanent for my needs—again, a renter's lifestyle—but it led me to Trova's smaller portable safe, the Trova Go+plus. This one was, you guessed it, just right.

It does what it has to do, and intelligently.

The Trova Go+plus is a safe, and it does exactly what a safe ought to: It keeps stuff locked up. And its smart, biometric unlocking mechanism is up to date with the times. You pair it with the Trova app on your phone, and any time you want to access what's inside, you have to enter a code or use Face ID in the app to click it open. That app will also let you know when the lid has been open for more than five minutes, if the safe has been carried out of range of your Bluetooth connection, and whether it needs a charge before you can access it again. The app can be finicky, and as safes go, the Trova Go+plus probably wouldn't hold up against a Bond villain's arsenal of tools. But it'll ward off snoops (like children) or more nefarious characters (like teenagers).

It is ready to travel.

The Trova Go+plus is spacious enough on the inside to store many items of import. Cash, jewelry, pills, and weed come to mind. Especially weed and weed paraphernalia, as the safe conceals odor as well as contents. But it is diminutive, small enough to throw in a backpack or purse so your stash can travel along with you. If that makes you a wee bit nervous, then the app's location tracking might sway you. Back at home, if you want it out of sight—and lack a fake bookcase—you can get creative with hiding spots. In a potted plant, perhaps. Too obvious? What about with the workout gear; no one goes in that part of the closet anymore. (Trova makes a Go safe that's a bit smaller, $40 cheaper, and available in a few more metallic tones.)

Trova values design, which makes all the difference.

Secrets are good. Secrets are fun. Secrets can verge on stylish, too, if they're kept in a safe that looks this nice. Trova employs aluminum alloy for a strong but sleek exterior that doesn't immediately scream: There are items worth stealing inside me! Subtlety can be stylish. I'm not going to tell you what I've got stored in my Trova Go+plus, because I'm not an idiot, but I do feel loads better knowing those things I value are not strewn through random shoe boxes underneath the bed.
