Carrie Fisher was truly of the future. When she had her daughter Billie Lourde in 1992, she chose to raise her without gender. In a September interview for Teen Vogue with Scream Queens creator Ryan Murphy, Lourd spoke of Fisher’s progressive parenting style.

Her mother had been an outspoken feminist icon for a very long time.

So it’s no surprise that she chose to raise her daughter free of traditional gender role norms. And it’s enlightening to hear Billie talk about her childhood. In fact, it’s downright inspiring.

Billie said she grew up without her gender defining her. Even her name was meant to be gender neutral.

“She raised me to not think of men and women as different,” Lourde said. “She raised me without gender. It’s kind of the reason she named me Billie. It’s not about being a strong woman — it’s about being a strong person. She once told me, ‘I never sat you down with a credo. It was more about leading by example.'”

Carrie Fisher had, throughout her career, been an outspoken advocate for women, and for feminism in Hollywood.

Though Murphy doesn’t directly mention it, it’s fair to say he was likely influenced by her (as we all were).

“You come from a family of rule-breakers,” Murphy told Lourde. “You grew up realizing that you can create your own rules. I love that about you.”

Sadly, Fisher died Tuesday after complications from a heart attack. She was 60 years old. The next day, her mother Debbie Reynolds died from a stroke. She was 84.

Now, the 24-year old Lourde has a daunting journey ahead of her to carry on her mother and grandmother’s legacy. We know, without a shadow of a doubt, that the force is strong with this one.
