Billie Eilish's much-anticipated new album, Happier Than Ever, is finally here, and fans wasted no time digging into it and forming opinions about the new songs. The album is full of Billie's deep, introspective lyrics and otherworldly, atmospheric production from her brother Finneas, but Happier Than Ever also has a dark side — and fans have so many feelings about the whole thing.
The album's central theme is the pressures of fame, and how Billie's life in the spotlight impacts everything from her relationships to her body image to navigating getting older in the public eye. These are all things young pop stars go through, but in Billie's hands, these feelings are somber, thoughtful, and affecting. There's even an acoustic ballad called "Male Fantasy" on the album, a bit of a departure from what we heard on When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? In short, Happier Than Ever isn't exactly happy, but it's nothing less than a powerful achievement from one of today's biggest pop stars.
The entire project is clearly very close to Billie's heart. "This was the most fulfilling most satisfying and profound experience I’ve ever had with my music. Finneas and I were just on cloud 9 making this album I feel," Billie wrote on Instagram when the album dropped. "I love every song on this project so so much it literally scares me thinking about putting it out into the world for anyone to listen to ... I grew so much in the process of making this album and experienced so much self realization and self reflection."
Fans had a lot to say about the album and how it made them feel. "I will never trust the word ‘happy’ ever again," wrote one fan, posting screenshots of songs from Billie's peers Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift alongside the song "Happier Than Ever." "Now Billie how am I supposed to go to work after listening to the album," tweeted another. "Billie really put me on a roller coaster with #HappierThanEver gurl knows what she's doin' lol bye I'm going to cry again don't talk to me," wrote another. "Sorry in advance but she’s about to double the amount of her Grammys," tweeted a fan who was all about Happier Than Ever's new direction. "WHAT WAS THAT ? THAT WAS HEAVENLY . BILLIE SNAPPED WITH HAPPIER THAN EVER , EVERYTHING IS PERFECT ; THE BEAT THE LYRICS THE INSTRUMENTS THE PRODUCTION AND THE VOCALS , DID Y'ALL HEAR HER VOCALS ? THEY'RE ANGELIC," enthused a fan.
Certain songs have a sexier vibe than her previous work, and fans were all about the new direction for their fave. "Billie listening to Oxytocin and Billie Bossa Nova with her family," wrote one, sharing a saucy pic of Shrek. "Oxytocin" has quickly become one of the most talked-about songs on the album due to its lyrics and synth-heavy production, and one fan wrote an impassioned defense of the song on Reddit, saying it made them feel like they were "transcending into another realm of reality ... in a nightclub in the year 2065, grinding on a half robot half human being." Despite some fans calling the song "trash," this fan wouldn't hear it. "I know music is subjective and people can like what they want but what we not gonna do is say that 'Oxytocin' is anything less than amazing," they wrote. "And if you have a differing opinion, you don't idc idc."
Take a look at some of our favorite reactions to Happier Than Ever and while you do so, we're going to give it another spin ... and another ... and another.
