We already know how Billie Eilish feels about our opinions on her red carpet looks. But just in case she sees this one: Billie, I loved it. I really did. This bizarre, bat-like satin black gown at the Grammys? Thrilling.

Fresh off winning an Oscar for her song “No Time To Die” the Academy Awards ceremony, the “Happier Than Ever” singer was back at the Grammys for a little more glitz and glamour. She paired the funky, sculptural ensemble—is that a coat wrapped around a dress?— with rubber-soled boots and skinny sunglasses. She finished it all off with one of her signature sharp updos. It’s giving...Batgirl?

The artist has begun to switch up her style in the years following the massive success of her first album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? But looser fits are still a staple in her wardrobe, Billie says, even as she attempts to come into her own sexuality—something that’s drawn the ire of critics on social media. In 2019, she said in a Calvin Klein ad, “That’s why I wear big, baggy clothes. Nobody can have an opinion because they haven't seen what's underneath.” After she started wearing more revealing clothing—like a corset in one of her Instagram posts—she addressed the controversy in a separate cover story with ELLE: “I lost 100,000 followers, just because of the boobs,” she said. “People are scared of big boobs.”

She later added, “The other day, I decided to wear a tank top. It wasn’t even a provocative shirt. But I know people are going to say, ‘Holy fuck, she’s dressing sexy and trying to make a statement.’ And I’m like, ‘No, I’m not. It’s 500 degrees and I just want to wear a tank top.’”

May Billie Eilish always wear exactly what she wants to wear, on the red carpet or off. She said it best herself: Social media opinions are, all too often, shit.
