Bill Nye Says Wearing a Face Mask is a “Matter of Life and Death” in Viral TikTok

  • In a new TikTok, Bill Nye urges everyone to wear a face mask to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

  • “The main reason we want you to wear a mask is to protect me from you!” he said.

  • Nye’s video quickly went viral on social media.

Bill Nye urges everyone to wear a face mask to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Inspired by his Bill Nye the Science Guy segment “Consider the Following,” the science educator shared a TikTok in which he attempted to blow out a candle while wearing one, demonstrating how the coverings contain respiratory particles. In both an N-95 mask and a surgical mask, he couldn’t snuff the flame.

“So the reason we want you to wear a mask is to protect you, sure,” he explained, growing rather impassioned. “But the main reason we want you to wear a mask is to protect me from you! And the particles from your respiratory system from getting into my respiratory system!”

At this point, the 64-year-old was practically yelling into the camera. “Everybody, this is a matter literally of life and death. And when I use the word literally I mean literally, a matter of life and death. So when you’re out in public, please wear a mask!” When the virus outbreak began, there was mixed messaging from health officials about the efficacy of masks, however, new research has confirmed that they do help limit the spread of the novel coronavirus, including cloth face coverings.

Nye’s video quickly went viral on Twitter. “Maybe hearing Bill Nye say it will finally make y’all listen, WEAR A MASK,” one person tweeted. “I have taught many a lesson with Bill Nye,” an educator tweeted, sharing the clip. “Here’s just one more.”

“If you love yourself, the world, and .@BillNye, then you’ll listen to what he has to say,” another added.

Clearly, people are hopeful that if anyone can drive home the importance of the mask message, it’s Nye, especially because Tom Hanks, also known as America’s Dad, already gave his two cents on the issue. The beloved actor, who was diagnosed with COVID-19 in March, also recently shared his disappointment in those who choose not to wear masks in public.

“There’s really only three things we can do in order to get to tomorrow: Wear a mask, social distance, wash our hands,” Hanks said at a virtual press conference on June 30 for his Apple TV+ movie Greyhound, People reports. He continued: “Those things are so simple, so easy, if anybody cannot find it in themselves to practice those three very basic things—I just think shame on you.”

He concluded with: “Do your part. It’s very basic. If you’re driving a car, you don’t go too fast, you use your turn signal and you avoid hitting pedestrians. My Lord, it’s common sense.”

And there you have it: Wear a mask, maintain your distance, and keep washing those hands like you mean it!
