Bike Harrisburg gearing up to celebrate Bike Month

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – May is Bike Month and Bike Harrisburg has a packed schedule of events to celebrate.

Throughout the month, bike riders can download a bingo card and complete five activities in a row to earn a prize.

Every Sunday at 7:15 a.m. bikers will meet at City Island in the parking lot near the Walnut Street Bridge for a casual ride (8-10 mph). Participants can choose to convene at Roxy’s Café afterward for breakfast.

On Fridays at 10 a.m., the Harrisburg Bicycle Club will host “Friday Lunch Rides” that will start from Five Bridges Health and Fitness. The rides will be 30-40 miles long at a pace of 12-13 mph.

Casual social rides will also be held during the month on:

  • Saturday, May 4 at 11 a.m. from Elementary Coffee

  • Thursday, May 9 at 6 p.m. from the Broad Street Market

  • Wednesday, May 15 at 5 p.m. from the Broad Street Market

  • Friday, May 24 at 6 p.m. from the Broad Street Market

To celebrate National Ride a Bike Day on Sunday, May 5 there will be a Capital Area Greenbelt Ride starting at 1 p.m. at the trailhead behind the City Line Diner (332 Derry St.). It will be a 20-mile ride at a 10-11 mph pace. There will be stops at points of interest along the way.

The fun continues on Friday, May 10 with the HBC Friday Nigth Social Ride at 6:15 p.m. Participants can park at the former HAAC Midtown Campus parking lot on Reily Street. The group will ride 10-15 miles through Harrisburg and have dinner after at Two Brothers Midtown Pizzeria.

Free bike repairs will be held on Saturday, May 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Commonwealth Avenue near the Capitol fountain for Capital Police Bike Safety Day. Bike safety information will be given as well as some freebies.

Wednesday, May 15 will be a day of remembrance for those who have died while biking in Pennsylvania this year. One white bike will be placed at the Capitol steps for each rider and the International Ride of Silence will take place in the evening.

The silent ride to commemorate those who lost their lives while biking will start at 7 p.m., with participants gathering at the USMC parking lot (2995 Green Street, Harrisburg) at 6:30 p.m. There will also be a 6:30 p.m. starting point at Camp Hill Borough Hall. Both groups will meet at the capitol and go up to the steps to remember those cyclists killed.

Friday, May 17 marks Bike to Work Day. Roxy’s Café will be giving a complimentary beverage to all bikers. Bike commuters can grab an “I Biked to Work Today” badge at 3rd and North Streets from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Broad Street Market will hold two bike repair days. Recycle Bicycle will do free repairs and teach applied physics to youth at the Market on May 17 from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, May 18 is Bike Day at the Market with free bike repair happening from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

On Friday, May 17 the Broad Street Market will hold a Bike Commuter Workshop at 7 p.m. to teach safe biking practices.
