Something that I always get complimented on is how good my hair smells, which is funny because I don’t wash my hair daily and I spend a lot of time on busy New York city streets. And while I originally wanted to gate-keep, I thought I’d pay it forward (cue "Karma" by Taylor Swift). The secret to gaining a litany of compliments? Hair perfume.

Hair Perfumes vs. Regular Perfume

Hair perfume is a fragrance mist that’s formulated especially for your hair and scalp and contains little to no alcohol. Traditional fragrance is often formulated with a high percentage of ethyl alcohol, which can be extremely drying to the hair and scalp, leaving it more prone to damage and breakage.

According to Philip Berkovitz, founder of Phillip B haircare, “A product designated as an actual hair perfume is more likely to be infused with blends of essential oils, aloe vera, or oleosomes to encapsulate the scent and add moisture into the hair shaft. A good hair perfume can help hydrate to support shine and moisture. It can also be used to mask odors that accumulate between washing or to fight off strong smells that tend to settle, like cigarettes, grills, and fireplaces.”

Looking for the best hair perfume to incorporate into your hair routine? I’ve included some of my favorite products below.

Best Hair Perfumes

Dae Prickly Pear Hair + Body Perfume

Notes of magnolia and mandarin balance out the fruity aroma of blooming prickly pear flowers, making for a well-balanced, fresh pairing. It’s the ideal fragrance for someone who is looking for a scent light enough to wear throughout the day.

Amika 001 Hair Fragrance

If you’re looking for a warm fall scent, sans pumpkin spice, look no further than Amika’s indulgent hair perfume. With notes of vanilla, fresh citrus and spicy sweet clover, it is sure to appeal to those who like both citrus or spicy scents alike.

SACHAJUAN Protective Hair Perfume

This multi-purpose protective hair perfume moisturizes, imparts shine, and freshens the hair with notes of green apple, peach, rose, cedar, and white musk. Like all the Sachajuan scents, it still has a touch of the brand’s signature clean scent.

Sol De Janeiro Brazilian Crush Cheirosa 62 Perfume Mist

Fans of the highly reviewed Brazilian Bum Bum Cream are going to love this perfume mist. The scent is warm and alluring, with top notes of pistachio and salted caramel.

Diptyque Eau Rihla Hair Mist

Rihla means “journey” in Arabic, and this spicy scent definitely evokes a sense of traveling through foreign lands. Rich and woody, it combines pink peppercorn, saffron, atlas cedar, and intoxicating raspberry (the hidden detail that is the signature of all Diptyque fragrances).

Gisou Honey Infused Hair Perfume

This sensual hair perfume is infused with Mirsalehi honey and argan oil which hydrates the hair, in addition to a UV shield that protects against harmful rays. It contains top notes of ginger and blackberry leaf, lavender, and a base note of honey to round everything out.

Byredo Blanche Hair Perfume

Originally one of the brand’s best-selling perfumes, it was consumers’ demand that inspired the hair fragrance version. A mix of white rose, violet, and sandalwood are at the forefront, though the base notes of peony and blonde woods are strong enough to make it beloved by all.
