First Look At Big Sky's New Lone Peak Tram Gondola Cars

Big Sky Resort, Montana, is updating its iconic Lone Peak tram with new gondola cars.

Late last week, the resort took to Instagram to show off the first look of the new cars, adorned with decals of the peaks viewable from Montana's highest scenic overlook: Lone Mountain. Take a peek below.

The original 15-passenger Lone Peak Tram opened in December 1995 and carried passengers to the top of, you guessed it, Lone Peak. The terrain offerings unlocked by this tram have been compared to the steep chutes and cliff bands of Mont-Blanc, France. In short, you need to know what you're doing to get down from Big Sky's Lone Peak in one piece.

Now, the resort is conducting a multi-year renovation of the iconic tram. New 75-passenger cars, shown in the aforementioned Instagram post, will replace the smaller cars of years past. And at the top terminal of Lone Peak, an "all-glass viewing platform with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks" is under construction.

The new tram cars and renovated top terminal will open to skiers during the winter of 2023.

Big Sky is also making changes to the Lone Peak Tram's ticketing system. Starting in 2023, the tram will charge skiers on a per-ride basis. The cost of these rides, which range from $10 to $40+ depending on the day, stacks on top of daily tickets and most standard season passes.

The resort plans to throttle tram capacity daily depending on "weather, snow quality, and terrain accessibility," according to Nancy Sheil, Big Sky's assistant ski patrol director.

For unlimited Lone Peak Tram access without paying per ride, skiers must purchase a Gold + Ikon Pass or a Gold Pass, which cost $2,700 and $2,400, respectively. Double Black Season Passes offer 25 free tram rides at $2,000 a pop.
