As we continue to make our way through the summer, we've been thinking about when our favorite TV shows will come back with new seasons. One such show we're talking about is Big Sky, which aired its season 2 finale in May on ABC.

Luckily, we already know that the crime drama is returning with a season 3 later this fall. Now, we just have to countdown the days until we get to see the cops of Montana tackle an intense mystery with all new characters in tow. If you're looking for more details on what you could potentially expect to see in Big Sky season 3, we've done the digging for you.

What is the release date for Big Sky season 3?

Season 3 of Big Sky will premiere on Wednesday, September 21 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC. For fans who have been watching since the thriller debuted in November 2020, this will be a new night from the original Thursday schedule.

Back in May, Deadline announced the exciting third season renewal news, which came after the series reached an average of 9 million viewers per episode. Shortly after, the show's official Instagram shared the word about its return with a celebratory message. "We’re staying under the #BigSky so stay tuned for Season 3 when we return to ABC! ⛰️," the post read.

Reacting to the news, Big Sky fans wasted no time expressed how thrilled they were. "I am so excited!!! This is just the best news ever and I can’t wait to see what’s in store when you all return for season 3!!! Big Sky is without a doubt my most [favorite] series in the world!!! 😍👏😍👏😍👏😍👏," one person wrote in the comments section. "Looking forward to another new season.😍🔥," another added.

Who is in the Big Sky season 3 cast?

As of right now, here's who we predict the Big Sky season 3 cast will include:

  • Katheryn Winnick as Jenny Hoyt, an ex-cop who works as a deputy detective

  • Kylie Bunbury as Cassie Dewell, a private detective who owns the Dewell & Hoyt investigation agency

  • Logan Marshall-Green as Travis Stone, Jenny's ex who is working undercover with a drug ring

  • Dedee Pfeiffer as Denise Brisbane

  • Omar Metwally as Mark Lindor, a deputy marshal who had interest in the season 2 case

  • Janina Gavankar as Ren Bhullar, a drug lord's daughter who's been overseeing a cartel's expansion throughout Montana

  • J. Anthony Pena as Deputy Poppernak, Jenny's partner in the sheriff's office

  • Anja Savcic as Scarlet Leyendecker, Ronald Pergman's girlfriend after he changed his name to "Arthur"

  • Jamie-Lynn Sigler as Tonya, a local waitress-turned-crime associate whose boyfriend goes missing

Big Sky is also about to get a lot more cramped — and a lot more famous. After making his first appearance in the season 2 finale, Supernatural actor Jensen Ackles will return for season 3. According to an Entertainment Weekly report, his character Sheriff Beau Arlen will now be Jenny's new boss after coming to Montana from Texas.

Before his Big Sky debut at the end of season 2, he teased his introduction and asks folks to stay tuned for additional details. "There is literally a new sheriff in town," he captioned a pic of himself in character. "More info to come @bigskyabc."

But don't think those are all the famous faces coming to Montana, because we're going to get a little more country. According to Deadline, country superstar Reba McEntire will join the cast of Big Sky season 3. Per the official announcement, the "Fancy" singer will be playing a successful backcountry outfitter named Sunny Barnes. As the matriarch of the Brick family, people come to Sunny when they want to go on big camping trips. But there's one issue: there seems to be a secret history of customers going missing.

As far as other new additions to the show, Big Sky fans will be introduced to quite a few different characters. Here are a few cast members to look out for:

  • Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Luke Mitchell joins the cast as Cormac, the charming son of Sunny Barnes who is busy running camping trips.

  • Salem actor Seth Gabel will portray Walter, a recluse living in the Montana wilderness. He also has an affinity for having some scary run-ins with hikers.

  • Lost alum Henry Ian Cusick will play Avery, a successful tech entrepreneur who goes on a camping trip (via Sunny's company) with his stepdaughter.

  • 9-1-1 actor Anirudh Pisharody joins as Luke, a city guy who was dragged out to the wilderness by his girlfriend Paige.

  • Gracepoint star Madalyn Horcher will portray Paige, a New Yorker who booked a camping trip for both herself and boyfriend Luke.

What will season 3 of Big Sky be about?

Right now, there are only far and few details about what Big Sky season 3 will be about. But according to a May press release from ABC, here's what fans can expect to see: "Reba McEntire and Jensen Ackles step into the world of Big Sky on its new night, bringing with them a new mystery to unravel as the mercurial matriarch of an established local family and the new sheriff in town, respectively."

Whoa, what a teaser. As soon as we get more information, we'll let you know ASAP.

Given that Big Sky is based on the books by C.J. Box, there is sure to be plenty of drama left for the network to explore. In fact, C.J. actually spoke about the process of adapting his work to television, and how sometimes it involves changing little moments for both the book and TV audiences.

"I’m very aware of the differences between writing a novel where I can control everything and turning that novel over to a large team of producers, writers, actors, crew, network executives and so on," he told CrimeReads in November 2020. "Changes are going to be made. It’s the difference between rowing a boat solo and going on a giant cruise ship. What I hope is that the series is as good as I think it will be and that it’ll drive readers to check out the books. In fact, that’s already happening."

While we're waiting to see what happens in season 3, perhaps you'll like to read some of C.J.'s novels about our Montana detectives. Check them out below:
