Big Jacket Memes Are Coming to an Instagram Near You
The latest nugget of fun to enter your Instagram feed is the big jacket meme.
Yesterday, for instance, dapper street style star Luka Sabbat was morphed into a jacket-wearing Stay Puft Marshmallow Man by @itsmaysmemes. The mysterious account resized Sabbat’s coats to be comically ginormous: A fleece piece was turned into a Woolly Mammoth-like topper, a standard slicked blue puffer became the size of a parked car in the background, and a tailored coat with Quasimodo-style shoulders reduced Sabbat’s handsome face into a tiny pin head.
The account’s philosophy, spelled out in its profile as “Giant jackets is the new wave” may be true: Sabbat-in-a-Franken-coat isn’t the only absurdist Insta-take on fashion currently circulating. A few days ago, two images of a dopey Joey Tribbiani of Friends made a more-is-more cameo with a superimposed Balenciaga logo two different times by the lovable content-creating account @Siduations, and soon after by @Hey_Reilly. (Great minds think alike!) The scene came from the episode “The One Where No One's Ready,” in which Joey wears all of Chandler’s clothes, and asks, while drowning in cotton: “Could I be wearing any more clothes?”
If we’re talking Balenciaga, yes, maybe Joey could be wearing more clothes—and maybe Sabbat could be wearing bigger coats. For Fall 2018, there were plenty of models walking in wingspan-style, so-thick-it's-hard-to-move-one’s-arms looks. And the label has been churning out some very layered get-ups and some very massive coats over the past few seasons: One moment that stands out in is the opening look from Spring 2017 Menswear collection, which was compared to the engulfing, skull-shrinking suit worn by Talking Heads's David Byrne in the '80s.
