Big Hart Campground is kicking off the camping season

Thomson, Ga. (WJBF) – Spring means it is a good time to enjoy the great weather outdoors. McDuffie County is teaming up with the Department of Natural Resources to celebrate.

Big Hart Campground is kicking off its camping season with a weekend filled with outdoor activities for all ages to enjoy.

“It’s the grand opening of the beach area pavilion, and it also allows us to showcase what we have done within the park so people can actually take a look at it,” said Matthew C. Reid, the County Campground Manager. “It does close at sunset. So, we will be closing the gates then. During the winter months, it will be open on the weekends. So, people can take advantage of our picnic areas and still grill out, which is something we have not done before.”

They had fishing, food trucks, as well as an animal adoption event.

“Our bigfoot event is going to be. The kids are going to learn about tracks, and they’ll make some Plaster Paris tracks of common animals,” said Kimberly Clements, an educator at McDuffie Environmental Education Center with the Georgia DNR. “Then we are going to take a hike and hopefully see Bigfoot. He’s been seen in the area, and then we’ll have marshmallows by the fire afterwards.”

Campers were excited to attend the event, which gave them something else to look forward to after spending many years at the campgrounds.

“We are frequent visitors,” said Sarah Bohler, a camper. “We are here all the time with them, and we are looking forward to having a lot of people here and a lot of friends and family.”

Others who were already camping were excited to see an event to go to while they were there.

“We are excited because we didn’t actually know going on today, said Cindy Peebles, a camper. “So, we found out and were like, oh yeah, let’s all go. So, we just loaded up a truckload and came to see what was going on.”

During the camping season, the park is open seven days a week. Admission to the campground is $5 per car.
