Since 2015, Whitney Thore has shared her journey on TLC's My Big Fat Fabulous Life. Viewers have watched as the North Carolina native navigated romance, her career and everyday life as a plus-sized woman—including the ups and downs in her weight. Recently, however, Thore addressed weight-loss surgery speculation after losing 100 pounds over the past year.
On Sunday, Feb. 11, the reality star took to Instagram with a playful video showing off her Mardi-Gras-inspired outfit. "Can anyone guess what we’re doing to celebrate Dad’s birthday? 🎺🎭⚜️," she captioned the post.
In the comments, Thore's Instagram followers sounded off with praise for her appearance. One person wondered, "Did you get surgery?! You look half the size!" while another declared, "Okayyyy skinny 👏👏👏."
Someone else commented, "You're looking a lot slimmer! What's your secret?"
This prompted the TLC star to edit her caption to directly respond to fans wondering if she underwent gastric bypass surgery.

"I hate addressing this, but no, I have not had medical intervention to lose weight," she wrote.
Thore, 39, explained that in 2015, during Season 1 of My Big Fat Fabulous Life, she weighed 385 pounds. In 2018, she lost 50 pounds. And when her mother, Babs Thore, got sick and eventually died in December 2022, she lost 50 pounds more.
"I weigh 285 pounds and I have been this weight for almost a year now," she shared. "This is the second time in my life I’ve lost 100 pounds."
Thore continued: "I’m still very fat. Thank you for the compliments, but I really don’t like obsessing over my body and I don’t like it when others do it either. 💜"
Hopefully—despite their best intentions—Instagram users will pause before commenting about changes in her (or anyone else's) body.
